原作では短編集「007号の冒険」の中の1作（「バラと拳銃」というタイトル。）、映画では1４作目。舞台はサンフランシスコ等。
ショーン・コネリーの降板後、1970～80年代にわたって新しいファンを獲得して大衆文化の旗手を守り続けたムーア・ボンド最後の作品。ムーアボンドの集大成となるべく製作された。
